I feel like I’m going to start typing a series of tips here on my blog to help other dancers with what helped me out in the past 8 years and hopefully some of these tips can also relate to you all!
Today, I will be going over “Solo Operation”.
Sometimes, although most of us hate it, we have to practice on our own. There are pros and cons of training by yourself. Because of series of different colleges that I went to, 80% of the times I train on my own. Let’s begin with the pros!
Training on your own creates the element of surprise. You can create something that is completely out of the blue and the next time when you battle, or even training with your friends they’ll see something new that you’ve been working on and brings up the energy for that practice to the next notch. Practicing by yourself also doesn’t put pressure. You can go whenever you feel like, practice whatever you feel that’s necessary comparing to being at practices seeing other people blowing things up and that could create tensions or even pressured to just “stuck” and do nothing. You can also listen to any types of music. Trust me when I say this: A lot of my new moves comes from listening to Rock, EDM, Dubstep, Jazz, Smooth Jazz, House, and so much more. Different music brings a whole new atmosphere to your mood and creativity, it helps you think outside the box.
Cons of training by yourself can be lack of motivation. A lot of the times you can start a practice and ended up doing nothing or dosing off. That’s lack of motivation. Being at a practice with other people you can feed off their energy and fire up some inspiration to do more things, but being by yourself there’s no one there to discipline you. Or you can create a move and doesn’t look as if you’re picturing… Meaning you may think that move is SO SICK, but when you’re doing it, it just looks complete opposite (I know I’m guilty).
Anyways, enough of Pros n cons, some of them may apply to you some don’t. But like I said, these are the things that have worked for me in the past, there are also other things you can try:
-Grab a paper and a pen, write an inspiring quote and tape it to the wall of wherever you’re practicing.
-Watch a crazy video before you start your practice.
-Meditation (Works for some people)
-Coffee, or energy drinks before a practice
I hope these tips helps! Thank you guys for reading!
